Migratory Birds spotted in Trichy

Trichy has emerged as a new migratory bird hotspot, with hundreds of bird species seen along the district's waterbodies.

In order to protect those areas for the birds, who mostly migrate from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere in search of their seasonal habitat, bird watchers and lovers have already made a request to the forest officials.

Two of Tiruchy's hotspots, Kiliyur Tank in Tiruverumbur and Periyakulam on Thanjavur Road close to Ariyamangalam, have recently seen a large influx of migratory birds.

"These birds used to prefer long term migration and even travel as long as 12,000 km from Central Asia and Europe," said Bala Bharathi of the Tiruchy Bird Club. "For the past few days, we have spotted bird species like Garganey, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Bar headed geese, Black tailed godwit, and Cotton Teal at Kiliyur Tank."
